GERAS Centre Video Series

These four series of videos are aimed at educating health care professionals on how to help prevent falls and fractures for residents in long-term care (LTC) through exercise. Challenging strength and balance exercises should be part of a multifactorial approach to preventing falls and fractures. Other parts of the multifactorial approach include environmental modifications (e.g., removing tripping hazards), staff and resident education, urinary incontinence management, and medications reviews. Each video series focuses on the role of a different team member in fall and fracture prevention: personal support workers, physiotherapists and physiotherapy assistants, group exercise instructors, and restorative care.

These videos were developed by the University of Waterloo, GERAS Centre for Aging Research, Osteoporosis Canada, and the Ontario Osteoporosis Strategy. The information and key messages in the videos were developed in accordance with evidence-based recommendations for fall and fracture prevention in LTC, and through consultations with LTC team members and experts. We gratefully acknowledge key collaborators on the development of the LTC video series: Osteoporosis Canada, GERAS Centre for Aging Research, Ontario Osteoporosis Strategy, University of Waterloo, Hamilton Health Sciences, St. Peter’s Hospital, Extendicare, University Health Network, Schlegel Villages, Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging, and St. Joseph’s Villa.
